Located in Ottawa, the National Association of Federal Retirees is the largest and most influential advocacy group for federal retirees, Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP veterans, and federal judges as well as their partners and survivors, protecting their benefits and promoting their interests while also addressing issues germane to retirement security for the broader Canadian population. A not-for-profit association with approximately 176,000 members in 79 branches across Canada, the association tirelessly advocates for the protection of federal pensions and benefits while providing valuable services to its members. The association has a full-time staff of 30 and a budget of $7 million.

We are recruiting for a Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

This outstanding equal opportunity organization is now seeking a dynamic, collaborative and visionary Chief Executive Officer to extend the association’s influence, advance the association’s advocacy strategy and enhance member support and services. Guided by the association’s strategic plan, the CEO will work with the staff, board, and branches to formulate creative, yet practical, solutions to the challenges facing the pension and health benefits landscape for retirees in Canada. Creating solid linkages with all stakeholders, the CEO will build visibility and continue to position the organization as a leader in advocating for members’ pensions and benefits and fair treatment in retirement. The new CEO will build lines of communication with the association’s branches and bring wisdom and experience to bear in working with the board to set strategic goals and deliver on objectives.


As the ideal candidate, you are a seasoned operational and strategic leader with a track record of working transparently with diverse stakeholders to achieve a common vision. You bring outstanding interpersonal and teambuilding skills coupled with solid financial and human resource management skills, and have the demonstrated ability to address complex, evolving issues. You ideally possess a blend of federal public sector and not-for-profit experience, coupled with an appreciation of the culture of the association’s membership.

Having worked with a board of directors, you are adept at building respectful relationships with diverse stakeholders and possess a deep understanding of governance principles and practices. You are sympathetic to the needs of pensioners and are looking to play a key leadership role in a dynamic organization with an opportunity to shape and architect the future for retirees in the federal public service and their partners. Fluent bilingualism in French and English is required.
