WSP is currently seeking an Electrical Engineer to join our Southern Ontario Industrial Group, located at our Kingston office. 

Reporting to the electrical discipline lead, this position will be responsible for completing electrical and instrumentation design for industrial clients in Southern Ontario.

Responsibilities:

  • Safety focus including consideration of safety in design, construction and operations
  • Design of electrical substations including equipment specification, ground grid design, overhead and underground line detailing for systems up to and including 44kV
  • Specification and layout of switchgear and motor control centres, and determination of protective devices
  • Creation of single line diagrams, protection drawings, equipment lists, cable and panel schedules
  • Specification of VFD, soft-starters, full-voltage starters, capacitor banks, harmonic filters, reactors and other 600V equipment
  • Design of client-specific motor control and/or communications systems
  • Electrical control system design including control panel layouts, component selection, and schematics
  • Integration of field instrumentation, sensory devices and the associated safety systems into an overall controls package to enable a fully-functional industrial control system
  • Generate short circuit, arc flash and protective device coordination studies using ETAP (or similar) power systems analysis software tools
  • Application of regulations to the area of expertise and ensuring compliance
  • Incorporation of safety and risk analysis into equipment designs
  • Electrical power and distribution systems design to support other disciplines, departments and offices
  • Perform engineering calculations
  • Ability to work with a minimum of instructions, complete tasks independently, make decisions and take responsibility on technical matters
  • Design management with input from senior managers on technical decisions
  • Coordination with various departments and offices required for project implementation
  • Industrial site reviews and evaluations for design verification and implementation
  • Write and review technical reports, and construction specifications
  • Cost estimating, review and assistance
  • Travel to various client sites, attend project meetings and conduct field reviews
  • Build and manage client relationships and respond to client requests
  • Mentor junior staff
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical design
  • Be fluent in the English language with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario; other provinces or states a benefit
  • Working knowledge of industrial power distribution systems, instrumentation, controls, communications, and automation
  • Working knowledge of CSA standards, ANSI standards, IEEE standards, Ontario Building Code and other applicable codes
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a working knowledge of the Microsoft Suite of programs
  • Project management experience and/or certification is a benefit
  • Control system (PLC, DCS, HMI) programming ability is a benefit
  • Working knowledge of power and/or control system modelling software a benefit
  • Must be able to attend industrial sites and observe all applicable safety regulations
  • Project experience in mills, smelters, mines, industrial sites, infrastructure, refinery, ports, material handling, pulp and paper is beneficial
  • Must possess a valid driver’s licence
  • Must possess a team player attitude and be able to work in a project team environment
