The Leeds and the Thousand Islands Public Library is recruiting for a Library Assistant. This is a part-time position.

The Library Assistant provides library services and coordinates programs and Southern Ontario Interlibrary Loan services. The Library Assistant also follows library policies and procedures in providing library services to users and assists with library programs and promotes library services to all potential users.


  • Performs clerical and library circulation duties including, checking books in and out, keeping records, issuing library memberships, collecting small amounts of money, provides reader’s advisory, shelving books, filing, mail, updating files, scheduling and assisting users with computers, faxing and photocopying for patrons etc.
  • Maintains all material acquisition orders and statistics.
  • Processes all new and donated library collection materials.
  • Maintains the library’s bibliographic database records.
  • Collects and reports daily collection and circulation statistics.
  • Coordinates the system-wide library collection rotations.
  • Assists with library programmes, promotion and outreach, including the TD Summer Reading Program.
  • Coordinates Interlibrary Loan services for the three-branch system.
  • Advises if there is a need to acquire or replace library materials and supplies.
  • Assists in inventorying, repairing and maintaining the assets of the library.
  • Maintains upgrades to computer software applications and troubleshoots computer hardware.
  • Assists with the training and coordination of library students and volunteers.
  • Responds to and resolves questions and concerns and advises the supervisor on relevant issues of concern.
  • Prepares reports and attends meetings and workshops as required
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned.
  • Post-secondary education with a willingness to take the EXCEL certificate in library services.
  • Experience with computer office software such as Word and Excel.
  • Ability to troubleshoot computer hardware.
  • Familiarity with library software would be an asset.
  • General understanding of library policies and procedures.
  • Experience in Technical services with bibliographic database knowledge.
  • Customer service experience with a minimum of two years in a public or office environment.
  • A willingness to continue to develop and learn.
  • Ability to handle technical and clerical functions accurately and efficiently.
  • Excellent analytical skills, oral and written communication.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and with people of all ages.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Driver's licence is preferred.
